[comp.sys.mac.hardware] ?Experience using Mobius monitor/accelerator/adaptor?

<CHARLESW@QUCDN.QueensU.CA> (02/12/91)

A friend is looking for people's experiences with the Mobius monitor and
accelerator/adaptor card. He's got the glossies from the company, but would
like to hear any stories (good/bad) before plunking down the cash. Anyone
used one of these things?

  Thank you.

I have been using a Mobius FPD and 16mhz accelerator, which came as a
package for my SE. I have been happy with the products.

Things that Mobius does right:
1) When they sell the product, instead of cautioning you to have the
combination video card/accelerator installed by a technician, they are
happy to have you install it yourself and still give you a full year
warrantee. The card is just a bit more complex to install than SIMMS in
an SE.

2) The monitor they sent me had a power-supply problem. It took just two
phone calls to convince Mobius that this was the problem, and they always
answered the phone immediately, politely, and helpfully. Their solution
was to UPS me a replacement monitor right away to try. That solved the
problem - I just packed the old monitor in the box that came with the
replacement monitor and THEY sent UPS to pick it up. All this cheerfully,
and at no cost to me.

3) I used a Radius for a year previously. The Mobius was at least as
reliable and the display has been clear, stable, and undistorted since
I bought it. The only thing the Radius had that the Mobius lacked was
an extra virtual half-page for instant scrolling, but many people were
I worked did not like this Radius feature because it made them dizzy
scrolling into the virtual page.

4) The acceleration provided with the Mobius is very substantial. It
cuts down my CPU intensive operations, like previewing an Adobe
Illustrator image, to about 65% of the unaccelerated speed. The
windowing in the Finder is very noticeably faster, which is essential
on a bigger screen. The only signicant problem I have had with the
Accelerator is that sounds are somewhat fuzzy. Fortunately, you can
turn off the accelerator any time from the Control Panel to bring back
sound quality, without having to reboot (unlike the Radius product I had).
Also my score in Crystal Quest went way down with the accelerator on -
those beasts start moving awfully fast. . .
