[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Hard Disks?

tchi@sal-sun6.usc.edu (Tony Chi) (02/13/91)

I'm looking into buying a 100MB hard disk for my Mac Plus. I have a 32MB Seagate on it right now but it's been 98% full for the last year. Looking in MacUser, everyone seems to be selling the Quantum 105. Is there one company better than the other, or more importantly, has anyone had major problems with one vender? I'm looking at APS or PowerDrive or Warehouse 54 since they seem to be the cheapest. Also is there any difference in access time for a slimline Quantum 105 as opposed to a normal one? I'm

buying an external so size is not really a factor. Finally, what about Maxtor and Rodime Cobras around 100MB? They seem more expensive but are they better. Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. I like my Seagate but their access time seem a lot slower than Quantums. On a Mac Plus, it probably doesn't matter.

The 105Meg Quantum is being discontinued by Quantum in favor of a
smaller unit. Therefore, there is massive dumping of the "old" 105's.
I just purchased an APS at $399. I understand that ClubMac is selling
at $349 (although I am unable to verify this).

The APS drive has had no difficulties (in only a week :-). Since it's
an internal, there wasn't much APS (or anyone else could add to screw
it up). I don't know how their boxes rate on their external drives.

If you're looking to upgrade to a 105Meg disk, now is definitely the
time to do it. These prices just can't be beat.

PS. Anyone interested in a working 40Meg internal (was in an SE/30)
or a 40Meg with a bad controller? Send mail...
