[comp.sys.mac.hardware] LC and Powerkey

porter@motcid.UUCP (Richard Porter) (02/12/91)

The summary says most of it: Does Powerkey by Sophisticated Circuits
work on an LC?

ALso, does it really turn the power off when the "Shutdown" command
is executed from the "Special" menu? Is so, how?

Yes, PowerKey does turn off your mac when you select the ShutDown item in
the Special menu. I think that it does this by intercepting the shutdown
command, by means of a cdev called PowerKey, and then it send a command
to the actual PowerKey box by means of the ADB cable that connects it to
the computer. The box then shuts down the computer when the normal
shutdown message shows up on your screen.

Doesn't the LC already shut itself off when you select shutdown?

No, the Mac LC has been stressed as *NOT* a Mac II. Shutting down as a Mac II
does is not a feature of the LC.

I'm not positive how the Powerkey Cdev works, but it sounds like it was
designed for the Mac II line of Macintish computers, and as we can all see
from its name the Mac LC is not a Mac II. The LC has a power switch located
on the back right of its "nice, pleasant, rounded shell" (read.. sarcasm)
that the user must switch on and off. However, the keyboard power switch
does act as the programmers key in the same manner as it does on the II si.
FYI: this message was posted from the LC that sits on my desk here at
Dartmouth.
