[comp.sys.mac.hardware] How many MIPSS is the Mac?

sanders@parc.xerox.com (Rex Sanders) (02/18/91)

I helped port a large FORTRAN program from VAX 750 to Mac II, with minimal
graphics to the screen. Before adding all the Mac user interface stuff,
we got a 4x speed up. Therefore, (scribbling furiously on back of envelope):

VAX 11/780 ==  1.0 MIPS (industry standard)

VAX 11/750 == .6 MIPS (according to DEC)

Mac II ==> 2.4 MIPS (my ballpark estimate)

Mac SE ==> .6 MIPS or slower (no floating point chip)

Mac IIx ==> 2.8 MIPS (Apple claimed 15% speedup)

Mac IIcx ==> 2.8 MIPS (basically same as IIx)

Mac SE/30 ==> 3 MIPS (Small B&W screen slightly faster!)

Mac IIci ==> 4 MIPS (claims of 50% faster than IIcx, with cache card)

Mac IIfx ==> 11 MIPS (IIfx 4x faster than IIx)

I have no idea what an LC or Si are worth.

Your mileage may vary.
