I am interested in finding out more about chat. However, chat is not
the only such program available for unix. There is also cu (call
unix), and we have a local program called dial, which probably performs
similar functions. I will assume until further notice that you already
have cu, and send you the documentation for dial. As you can see by the
names of these programs, they are mostly used for talking over our
autodialer to other systems, but they can both also be used over serial
lines.

(instructions for "dial") d. a. norman. Sept 6, 1981 /csl/bin/doc/dial/dial

"dial" automatically dials phone number of a remote computer (RC) or lets
you specify an arbitrary phone number (up to 15 digits)
Once at RC, you can temporarily "escape" back to "dial" (with a control-e),
divert "output" to a file (o filename), take "input" from a file (i filename),
"quit" (q), "return" to RC (r), get more complete instructions (?), etc.
