[comp.sys.mac.hardware] IIci

Brooks@slacvm.slac.stanford.edu (Brooks Collins) (01/31/91)

I have been happily using CDTech portadrive (CD-ROM) and APS Syquest 45Mb
removable drive on IIci with 5 Mb memory installed (system 6.0.7).

A couple of weeks ago I installed additional 4Mb memory (so 8Mb in total
now). It looks as if since then I cannot make the IIci recognize both the CDTech and APS 45R _simultaneously_ on the SCSI chain. If I connect the cable only to the CDTech, that works fine. If I connect only to the APS 45R, that works fine, too. However, if I daisy-chain both CDTech and APS 45R, only the APS 45R shows up (I am using SCSI Probe 2.0.3 to "diagnose" the thing...)

I never came across this problem when I was with 5Mb memory.
So, could it be related to some subtleties of IIci's handling 8 Mb memory
space? Or should I suspect that something got busted in the SCSI-SCSI cable without reporting it to me? Or one of the SCSI connectors went bad on CDTech or APS 45R ??? Is there any INITs kind of stuff that are known to cause this type of problems???

The Opinions expressed are my own unless
stolen from pulp fiction; the Department of
Energy and Stanford University don't even know I have them.

Due to a feature of the IIci setup you mention, you should not
terminate the SCSI bus. Just remove external termination and all will
be fine.

We have exactly the same setup at our lab (IIci/8/80 PortaDrive,
Syquest), and it only works with not external termination.

Maurice - Thank you for your comment on the above subject.

It turned out that it was due to a bad (flaky) SCSI-SCSI
cable. This is a cable that I got free of charge from
EduCorp when I bought the CD PortaDrive at the MacWorld
Expo (SF) this year (yuck yuck yuck!).

I noticed it by wiggling the cable on the connector while
watching the "SCSI Bus not terminated" message with
          a cdev "SCSI Probe".

Today I got a brand-new SCSI-SCSI cable from the local
ComputerWare store and now everything is back in business.

By the way, in my case, the cable configuration I ended
          up with is -

   IIci -----+ +-----------+ +-Terminator
             | | | |
             | | | |
           APS 45R Drive CDTech Drive

This works for any combinations of APS and CDTech on/off
status. I don't think neither APS 45R nor CDTech are
internally terminated. Is it not right?
                                                       - Nobu

We have the same setup here (IIci/8meg/APS Syquest/CDTech). All we
do is remove the external termination and bingo, all is fine.
