Does anyone know of a (reputable) *color* video card manufacturer (e.g., RasterOps, Micron, etc.) that is capable of displaying a resolution GREATER THAN 640x480 but LESS THAN 1024x768? I ask because I want to purchase a Sony 1304 (which *is* 1024x768 (non-interlaced) capable) and display something *more* than 640x480, but not have the DPI get too high (say, greater than 85 or so)? Micron Technology has a 1024x768 card that is displayable on the Sony 1304, but the DPI approaches 100(!) (which, for me, is too high :-). Any suggestions? Is the MaxAppleZoom init compatible with the 1304 monitor? (Currently, I have a MaxAppleZoom-compatible Apple video card.) Thanks, -jwh -- John Hardin MCC CAD Program AT&T: 512/338-3535 3500 W. Balcones Center Drive >ARPA: hardin@mcc.com Austin, TX 78759-6509 >UUCP: {harvard,gatech,uunet}!cs.utexas.edu!hardin%mcc.com I have a Sony 1304 and awhile back was looking, as you are now, for a hardware or software solution that would let me use all of my 14" screen at 72-75 dpi. (At this resolution, a 1" square drawn in MacDraw using MacDraw's rulers will produce an image on the screen that measures 1" according to a real-world ruler held up to the glass. ie WYSIWYG). Most video cards are designed for either 13" displays at nearly 75dpi or 19" displays at nearly 75 dpi. A 19" display at about 75 dpi is displaying about 1024 x 768 pixels. A Sony 1304 is capable of displaying 1024 x 768 pixels so you can put in a 19" card and connect it to a 1304 14" monitor and it will work, but unfortunatly its displaying 100 dpi and the mac menus look more like 6 pt fonts. That is you have 19" of desktop squeezed into 14" of display. A potential software solution is MaxAppleZoom but this doesn't display anymore of the desktop. It mearly maps 640 pixels of virtual space into 7?? of hardware screen pixels. That is, it enlarges the image and a 1"in square according to the MacDraw rulers will take up 1+ inches of the glass screen. (Since the 1304 has knobs that increase image size, MAZ is not needed to fill up more of the 14" screen.) The dpi goes down. I didn't find any solution and I gave up. However, in the last issue of either MacUser or MacWorld (but not MacWeeK) there was an add near the back that touted a new 14" board from raster-ops with a price of "Call for Price" listed and no model number or further description. So, I could have made all this much much shorter and said, "Call RasterOps. They *may* be making 14" boards.) Let me know if they are. I hope that this is related enough...Does anyone know if Stepping Out II will work on an SE/30 with 8-bit 13"/14" color monitor? How would that work? Does the color monitor get treated as a virtual screen? Or does the monitor software completely kill all hope of using the 9" screen separately from the bigger color display? I use MAZ on my Apple monitor with a vanilla Mac II, (8 bit color) and it displays more of the desktop on my system. It displays a desktop that is about 70 pixels higher and 50 pixels wider (sorry I don't have my mac handy to give the exact number, but I know its 7xx by 6xx). You just adjust the height and width on the monitor so the whole image is displayed on the screen. A 1" square in MacDraw becomes smaller, not larger. By the way, I've been using MAZ 1.2 for 10 months and think its great. I can get almost a full page on the screen. I have never had any compatibility problems and would never go back to the normal desktop.
