I had my Mac IIci sitting in a vertical position next to my monitor for a month. Just a couple days ago, my floppy drive went flakey. It would verify disks to be OK, and then when I tried to write to them errors popped up all over (mostly in the higher sectors). This problem occurred for both DS/DD and HD disks. I moved my box into the horizontal position and put it under the monitor. Now, everything works fine. I thought that either position was acceptable. Monitors are a happy little source of electromagnetic radiation, especially at the rear and the sides, I'm told. The range is -short-, but it's there. (I'm no EE person, so I'm relying on secondhand info). It would seem that putting the CPU back under the monitor put the floppy drive further from the monitor than it was when it was upright next to the monitor. Of course, it could just be hamsters.
