Does the name "Venus" ring a bell anywhere?
Last I heard DEC is planning to unveil a "super VAX" in
about two years or so.

The way I understand things, the VENUS is the VAX developed along with
the JUPITER. The JUPITER is running around 10 MIPS, and should be
announced this year. (The JUPITER, in case you dont know, is the new
DEC-20). The VENUS could NOT take advantage of some of the good stuff
in the JUPITER (Pipelining variable length instructions costs much more
than pipelining fixed length instructions), so the VENUS, from the
rumors I heard, was running only around 2 MIPS. I have heard that
there is another large VAX under development, aimed at around 4 MIPS.
Now the question is, will DEC announce the 2 MIP machine, or will
they wait for the 4 MIP machine.
All of the above information is based on rumors that I have heard,
outside the bounds of any non-disclosure agreement, so I give it
with absolutely no guarantees of its accuracy.
