[comp.sys.mac.hardware] SuperDrives in non SWIMmming Macs...

v564huce@ubvmsa.cc.buffalo.edu (Allen Hsu) (03/06/91)

Hey Y'all
SuperDrive in a vanilla Mac? Well, there's only one solution other
than an Apple upgrade. Kennect Technology has a gadget called a Rapport. It
supposedly allows one to use 1.44 meg drives on otherwise exluded machines
(including 512KE Macs I'm told). This is not a cheap option at something like
$250.00 (It could be less).
Outside of that, no. Apple's upgrade gets you a SWIM (Super
Intergrated Wozniak Machine) chip. I'm no rreally sure that the ROMs, drive
and chip is worth that much. Shereve Systems was advertising a Mac II to Mac
IIX upgrade for like $800, not including drives. So for around $1000 one can
have a faster machine and drive. Last I heard, Apple still wants about $580
for their upgrade.

You can also buy an external FDHD drive for the Mac Plus & SE (without the FDHD
drive) for about $400 or so, which plugs into the SCSI port. It's supposedly
faster.
