[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Rumor

barek@lake.scar.toronto.edu (William Barek) (02/23/91)

Just today I have heard a rumor that new Classic has a system startup
in ROM. If you press a certain key it will boot up without a disk.
 ??? I guess just a rumor, isn't it ??

No, this is correct. You need to hold down a certain set of special keys
on startup. Shift-Command.
(or was that Option-Command?)
(Shift-Option-Command?)
(Shift-Option-Mouse Button?)
(Command-Shift-Option-Mouse Button???)

well anywa, it DOES work, you just have to figure out which keys.

I think it was command-shift-X-O, but maybe the option key was supposed
to be in there too. (I did get it to work... pretty nifty :)

Command, Option, X, O (that's "oh", not "zero"). All four, held down
from power on to Finder. Apple's code name for the Classic was the Mac
XO, so this makes a certain kind of sense.

Unfortunately, I believe the ROM-wired system is 6.0.6, which implies
that whateve major bugs forced the 6.0.7 release are still running free.

From the "Information on Hidden Mac Treasures" at Sumex:

For the Classic, hold down the Command-Option-X-O on startup. If you wait
long enough the Mac will create an internal ROM disk (System 6.03, Finder 6.1x,
AppleShare). Then use a utility that lets you see invisible folders (i.e.
ResEdit, MacTools) and you will see an invisible folder in the ROM disk's
system folder that lists those who worked on the Classic. Neat

I have no idea what other systems and finders it will work with. Now that
we know what to look for, maybe someone with a classic can try it and tell us.

First of all holding down Command-Option-X-O with one hand while turning on my Mac is pretty difficult. I ended up using two hands to hold down the keys while hitting the switch on my power strip with my foot. I did see the Rom startup icon. I'm going to use Resedit tonight to find the hidden folder. That should make up for the fact that the developer names are no longer engraved on the inside of the Classic case. Also Macsbug is included in the Rom startup software.

Actually, Apple never uses Control-Alt-Delete. It does, however, use the
familiar combination Control-Open Apple-Reset for resetting the IIsi.
(same combination used on the Apple //e, //c, IIGS)
