I've got two Macintosh IIcx systems with 40MB hard drives that on occasion do not spin up on a cold start. Continually turning off and then turning on the power has no effect. Both systems have 40MB drives, one is a Sony drive the other I'm not sure - I haven't looked. This problem occurs every couple of weeks on these two systems, I've got ten other IIcx systems that do not have this problem. The odd thing is that I can always start the disk spinning by rapping on the side of the Macintosh or by opening the Mac and tapping the drive. Is this a known problem with some of the Apple provided hard drives? Our dealer didn't know of any problems with IIcx 40MB drives. Both systems are still under warrenty so I guess I'll wait until it happens again and call in the dealer to replace the drives. Any thoughts? Mike, I know that the Quantum drives had this problem and on both the 40 and 80 meg models...I'm not so sure about the Sony drives though.. Tell your dealer to look on page 8.7.1 of his Apple Service Program manual.. It states that you can get a ROM change to correct the problem (if its a quantum). Hope this helps...
