I subscribe to the Algol Bulletin, and I just got a mailing that seems
to have gone out to the AB mailing list. It's from an outfit that says
it's been commissioned to study the market potential of an Algol 68
compiler for the VAX. The proposed compiler would be based on the "RS"
portable compiler, which is (they say) full Algol 68 except for:
- modes and identifiers must be declared before use
- a couple of new data structures for time-critical applications
- no parallel clauses or semaphores
- a separate-compilation system
Note that the language under discussion here is Algol 68, not Algol 60.
(Algol 68 is to Algol 60 as PL/I is to Fortran.)
Enclosed with the letter was a questionnaire. The only question about
operating systems mentions both UNIX and VMS, so they are aware of both.
I have neither a VAX nor much interest in Algol 68; if you have both,
you might want to drop them a line. The address given was:
Algol 68 Survey

and the signature on the cover letter was that of a B.J. Dobbing.
