[comp.sys.mac.hardware] QMS PS-410 RAM upgrade

chow@theory.tn.cornell.edu (Christopher Chow) (03/06/91)

The QMS PS-410 is an excellent printer, but QMS seems to want a fortune to
upgrade the 410's standard 2 Mb RAM to 3, 4, or 6 Mb. Unfortunately, the 410
does not use standard (LW IINTX or IIfx) SIMMS - it uses a QMS designed
RAM expansion board.

Does anyone know whether:

(1) There exist any outside vendors of these RAM expansion boards?

    - or -

(2) Whether it is possible to cheaply add RAM onto the QMS standard
    1 MB expansion board?

There are quite a few places that carry the RAM upgrades for the QMS
PS-410. I called around last week and here is what I found. I stopped when I
got to MacDepot, read on and you'll see why.

Maya 800-541-2318 1meg $375, 2meg $609, 4meg $1000

Mac Systems & Accessories 800-880-0458 They can get them but could not quote a
price at the time I called.

Advance 800-654-3242 They can get them but could not quote a price at the time
                     I called.

MacDepot 800-222-2808 They stopped selling them because of the cost, but they
said they will be caring a module in the near future
that is a carrier for standard Mac SIMMs and will allow
the QMS to be upgraded to 6meg (2 internal + 4 on
the carrier). This module will only cost about $65,
the final price was not definite because they are still
evaluating the module. The guy I spoke with said they
have seen them already so this is not too far off. I
figure that with the low cost of 256K SIMMs you could
upgrade to 3meg for real cheap (especially if you find
them used, I've seen people selling them here for $5).
with 1meg SIMMs going for under $45 you could upgrade to
                      6meg for less than $250.

Unless you have to upgrade now I suggest waiting for this module.
