[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Sony 40MB HDs

yuan@uhccux.uhcc.Hawaii.Edu (Yuan Chang) (02/23/91)

Hi,

Anybody have unusual problems with the Sony 40MB HDs that Apple
sells as the SC40? So far, three of them have died (or became unusable)
within a month of each other. Two of them from recurring stuck spindle (or
it could be "sticktion", but I have no way to tell for certain), and one
from an intermittent failure on the logic board. That's 3 failures out of
17 of these (which are all about a year old), an unacceptably high failure
rate for me. Does Sony have warrantee on these things for more than a year?
I think we'll replace our with the trusty Quantums...

Our shop has seen enough failures of the Sony 40 Meg drive that they are
now keeping track of the drive serial numbers, looking for a pattern.

There is a known problem at Apple with the Sony 40 meg drives. I have
heard from 2 reliable sources at Apple that these drives have a lubrication
migration problem causing the stiction problem reported here. There is
a missing seal on the actuator arm per my sources that allows grease to
migrate to the platter. When the aromatics disapate the grease gets real
sticky and the heads stick to the platter. One cure is to never turn off the
drive and let it cool down... I have another brand drive that does this that
i have had on for 3 years... not nice but it works.
