[comp.sys.mac.hardware] MY SE/30 is DEAD...

nwc1@quads.uchicago.edu (einsturzende neubaten) (03/10/91)

Subject line says it all. Here are the specifics. 1989 SE/30 running 6.0.5,
loads of things, running SingleShare at the time, connected into AppleTalk
network via PhoneNET connectors. I come back home, and bingo, it's screen
is grey- with a funny sort of problem. I turn it off, then on again. No
"bong" noise- uhoh. HD spins up to speed, light flashes a little, but no go.
Pressing restart button on side does nothing- screen flickers, but odd,
static-filled screen comes up. Restart from floppy unsuccessful.

I realize that this is a severe hardware problem, but I'm not so sure that I
understand how everything could work so right, yet not work at all. Anyone
have any ideas? Is this a fried Mac? Power Supply must be fine, right? Screen
OK. Oh, I'd much rather get "Sad Mac" codes, to tell the truth. Oh, well. I
thought I'd share this with y'all. I'll take it in to the dealer, but I was
wondering if anyone had ever seen anything like it.

:-( <- this is me. 'later.

I have just such an SE-30 on my desktop (well, it kept doing that
off and on until earlier this week) and I noticed that wiggling a
certain cable inside the Mac seems to make the problem go away -
though if it stays away is an open question still.

So, the recommended procedure (according to my experience) is to open
up your SE-30 and wiggle the cables (in my case it seems that the
power cable to the hard disk needed to be bent away from the cage of
    the power-supply ....

Good Luck, Mr. "Beep Beep Beavers" or "Einstuerzende Neubauten" or
whoever you are ... (if you think that I think that I'd prefer being
provided a first or even fictitious name, to address myself to, you
are right! btw, you even misspelled "Einstuerzende Neubauten" in
    your FROM-header
					1/2 :-)

From the business pages of Toronto's National Newspaper:
"Oil prices have fallen lately. We include this news for the benefit of gas
stations, which otherwise wouldn't learn of it for six monts."
