[comp.sys.mac.hardware] New vs. old monochrome monitor - quality of old one better?

rgonzal@elbereth.rutgers.edu (Ralph Gonzalez) (03/11/91)

I've mentioned a couple of times in this newsgroup that I seem to have
a few problems with my NEW Apple 12" monochrome (gray-scale) monitor.
Namely, a mild "ghost" of dark objects appears about 1/16" to the
right of the object. In addition, a mild "smearing" of dark objects
was visible to the right of the object for several inches.

After much swapping of video cards and after trying two identical
units of this New 12" monochrome monitor, here are my conclusions.

First in case anyone doesn't know the difference between the old and
new Apple monochrome monitors, they both have the same screen size and
resolution (640x480), but are different cosmetically:

    *** ***
    *** ***********
    **** ***********
    ************* ***********
    ************* ***********
    ************* ***********
    ************* ***

       NEW OLD

(These are side views.)

The "smearing" problem was caused by my video card (which I am going
to exchange).

The "shadow" 1/16" to the right of dark objects seems to be an
artifact of the NEW Apple 12" monochrome monitor! I tried two samples
of this monitor, and the "shadow" was present on both. I tried
swapping video cards (both the old Apple 4-bit and 8-bit cards and the
new Apple 4x8 card) which had no effect. I also tried the monitors on
entirely different systems (Mac IIcx, Mac II) with no change.

My conclusion is that the NEW 12" monochrome monitor has a design flaw
which causes this mild shadow. It is not very distracting, so I guess
I'm going to have to live with it.

My question is: If you have either the new or old 12" monochrome
monitor, could you please look closely at it to see if you have this
"shadow" and e-mail me your conclusion? I wonder if the old monitor
was better-designed than the new one?

Thanks!
