I'm looking for a cheap 2400 baud modem for a Mac IIcx. Has anyone tried the one from MacWarehouse (800-255-6227): PowerUser 2400 - $99 with cable Or is anyone selling a used 1200 or 2400 baud modem for real cheap? Incidentally, what's the deal with a "fax modem"? Some of these are only about $30 more expensive. I take it they let you send text files or bitmaps to fax machines, and/or receive faxes in this form? Do you need the software separately? Thanks for your comments, rgonzal@chowder.rutgers.edu

I got the Poweruser 2400 from MacWareHouse for $99 about a month ago, and am totally satisfied with it. It is very small, has a full complement of lights, and is Hayes compatible. Also, I have observed no noise characters, although I haven't tried any long-distance transfers yet. On local calls, not a single garbage character. Maybe this is not that unusual for local calls at 2400, however. 1200 works fine also. Highly recommended. -- John Andrews (andrews@csrd.uiuc.edu) "Say it in a short .sig, or don't say it" Graduate Research Assistant, Center for Supercomputing R&D, Urbana, IL
