[net.followup] net overload...duplicate articles

wbpesch@ihuxp.UUCP (Walt Pesch) (06/13/84)

I know that using vnews you will not see a posting to multiple
newsgroups after the first time that you view the article. Using
a single transmission posting to multiple groups therefor does not
bother you. And the additional bytes transmitted are the group names
for the multiple postings.

The problem is when people do not use multiple newsgroups for a
posting. They will post to one group after sourcing in a file
containing their article, and then will post to another group after
sourcing in the same file. Therefor, you have two articles created
that are exactly the same except they are destined for differant
newsgroups. This is especially prevalient in two local area groups,
ih.wanted and chi.wanted.

Of course the way to correct this situation is through education.
Also, could one way to fix the problem of people posting the same
info in differant articles differing only in news groups be to
not put an article out onto the net until a time has expired, say an
hour, in which an article with the same title is also generated and is
in responce to the same references?

The duplication I was refering to is the appearance of two copies of the
same posting in the same group, rather than across groups. I think there
may be a bug somewhere that duplicates some postings.

One problem \I/ have with so many duplicate articles is not in having to
store them all or transmit them all, but in having to read them all.
Readnews half-tries not to show you the same article twice in different
newsgroups, but only within the same invocation. If the same article is
posted to net.ai and net.unix-wizards, say, and I don't have the stamina to
read all the way from net.ai to net.unix-wizards in one sitting, then I'm
going to see that article again the next time through, and that's a pain.

Moreover, posting to net.ai and net.unix-wizards (say) means that both
groups will tend to get all of the followup articles, which often go off on
tangents aplicable to only one of the groups.
