[comp.sys.mac.hardware] On scanners & imagesetters...

schoen2@husc9.harvard.edu (Michael Schoen) (03/13/91)

Hello there. I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I work on
a daily newspaper, and we are in the midst of converting our system into
a Mac/PC Novell networked high-tech publishing system.

I need advice on two components: scanners & imagesetters.

Scanner:	We might need something > 300dpi, and color would be nice,
since we will be scanning in our photographs. The
Sharp JX-600 seems good (at $12,000) but I was wondering if
anyone has had any experience with the La Cie Silverscanner.
It is 300x600, with interpolation up to 1200dpi. It has
256 gs or the full 16.7 mill colors. And its only $2,000.
		Any advice?

Imagesetter:	We will need a minimum of 1200dpi, to film and RC paper. We've
looked at Linotype, Varityper, and Hyphen. Anyone with direct
experience? Also, we're looking for a cheap plain paper
proof printer, greater than 300 dpi, preferably able to handle
a tabloid (11x17) page. Any advice?

Thanks for your help.
