[comp.sys.mac.hardware] StyleWriter - what's it like?

es1o+@andrew.cmu.edu (Eric Mitchell Snider) (03/14/91)

I just saw the new price list from the computer store at CMU and saw the
StyleWriter. Anyway, does anyone have some info on it? How fast is it?
How much are ink cartridges? Is there a better printer for a similar
price?

Well I just got a chance to test out the new Style Writer ink-jet and I'd
have to say that the print quality was excellent. Unfortunately the speed of
the printing is certainly lacking. The printer prints 1/2 page per minute at
best quality and about a page per minute a faster quality. The printer was able
to print very high quality using the true type fonts and should also have good
quality printing using ATM for older fonts. The first thing that struck me
about this machine was how small it was. This unit can easily fit in your
briefcase. I'm not sure of the exact dimensions but from eying it I'd say that
it is about Width= 2in, Height= 3 1/2 inches and about a foot in length. I
read that not only is the ink cartridge replaced but also the print head
everytime that you chance it (retailing about 22.00 a cartridge) which keeps
the print quality very high. I'm looking to buy either this machine or the new
Personal Laser Writer LS (which prints 4 pages a minute). Before all of the
educational discount questions start, I heard a price quote of $368 at my, not
including the sheet feeder. The sheet feeder may be included (not sure).
Either way, the sheet feeder is really a must for printing using the Style
Writer if you want to print more than one page (otherwise you'll be hand load-
ing each and everyone.) This sheet feeder increases the size of course, but
you'll still find that it takes up much less space than the Imagewritter II
printer.

Is either the Stylewriter or the new Personal Laserwriter able to use
 AppleTalk?

The new Style Writer is only able to use the serial port. Oh well :-)
