I was working on my Mac (a 512E with a 2 meg Dove upgrade, both of which are several years old), when it froze up, made nasty lines on the screen and sort of crackled a lot. I turned off the power. When I restarted, I got the black screen with the very sad Mac face (the one with X's for eyes) and the code 020800 (I think) and little blinking lines and dots underneath that look a little like Morse code. Turning it off and on again produced the same result. Leaving it off overnight didn't help. I my Mac terminal? Can it be saved? Any diagnosis or prognosis would be appreciated. Thanks, John Walsh U33695@UICVM.BITNET p.s. Sorry about the multiple posts, but it wasn't clear where this problem would be most appropriate, and besides, I'm a desperate man.

A while back I wrote saying my Mac 512E with a Dove upgrade was acting very dea d. I got several helpful messages with a fair range of advice. I took my machi ne apart and the problem seemed to cure itself. However, I have had occasional system crashes since. The system crash problem occured before (last summer). My diagnosis was overheating (running the machine without the cover cured the p roblem). Anyone else had this overheating problem? Do any of the aftermarket fans help? To all those who answered, "Thanks." John Walsh U33695@UICVM.BITNET
