[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Adv/Disadv. of a VGA Mac LC system

youngdahl@gacvx1.gac.edu (03/20/91)

Ok, I asked the question of VGA monitors and the LC before, but I've still got
a few questions remaining largely unanswered.

1. Does a 13" VGA monitor hooked up to the LC give 640x480x256 graphics if
the extra VRAM is available? (And of course, does it give 16 colors w/o
    the VRAM)

2. What is a digital RGB monitor like the VGA one forementioned going to
look like in comparison to an Apple analog 13" RGB monitor? Are they
going to be similar in screen display, or is the VGA monitor going to
be "ugly" (and please -- give me reasons ... not just "VGA isn't as
    good as the Apple monitor)

I'm assuming two things for even posing these questions:

o That purchasing a Mac LC 2/40 system without a monitor and
purchasing a seperate VGA monitor will give me roughly a
13" LC system for aproximately the cost of a 12" Apple RGB
            Color LC system.

o That a VGA monitor can be hooked up to the LC with a simple
cable. (i.e. no crazy hardware tricks or bazaar cables)

As you can see, I've decided to purchase a 13" LC system. The only problem
is that our Apple Dealer on campus is "forcing" MacDraw and MacWrite to be
bundled with every Mac they sell, and thus forcing an extra $200 price on me.
I'd therefore like to cut every corner possible in terms of price so that I
can still get an LC system for about $1999.

Thanks in advance for any useful information you can
give me,
