[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Interchanging Removable Cartridges

chma@marlin.jcu.edu.au (Michael Antolovich) (03/13/91)

Hi,
Now that I'm getting a Syquest removable drive (45M) from APS, is it
possible to swap disks with similar drives (ie Syquest internals but
different labels, and I guess software drivers). Can I use the same
software as someone elses 'brand' drive and then interchange data ?
Come to think of it, is it possible to interchange cartridges between
2 drives of the same 'brand' ?
Also, does SilverLining handle these drives (if so which
version did it start ?)
				Thanks again,
				Michael.

I've used Syquest drives from Maxcess, PLI, and, err, Ehman I believe, each
with different drivers, and could interchange cartridges freely between all
drives, no matter which drive they were formatted with. No problem.

On a negative note, the Maxcess drive, which I've had for about a year now,
has gone flakey. Often it refuses to spin up. It just clicks and the lights
on the front blink. It's still under warranty, but I haven't gotten around to
talking to Maxcess yet.

I've also had good luck moving cartridges between different drives, except for
cartridges formatted with SilverLining. I think there's a text file at Sumex
which mentions this problem. It's probably in the reports subdirectory.

I've had no problems reading SL-formatted cartridges (or formatted by any other
driver) as long as I reboot first. In fact, the SL driver seems to like
cartridges formatted with other drivers, so if I put in an SL-formatted cart
first, I can subsequently insert carts formatted by other drivers without
having to reboot first (I don't have SL by the way; it's just that I sometimes
get sent SL-formatted carts.)

I format my cartridges with the Mass Micro software, they seem to
work in every drive I've ever tried.

Last week a friend came by and his cartridge, formatted by silver
lining, would not mount on my "noname brand" SyQuest drive. It did
mount on my Mass Micro drive though...

I have incredible troubles when I am on a system with only one SyQuest drive
attached and I want to transfer files from one cartridge (formatted with Mass
Micro software) and another (formatted with who-knows-what software).

Neither driver on the cartridges will recognize the other when it is inserted.

How to solve this problem?

You tell me...
