Hello everyone, I am looking to purchase a Mac LC when System 7.0 comes out, and have a few questions: 1. knowing how memory hungry Sys 7 is, are there special SIMMS for the LC? How many should I install, and where are they available from? 2. Most economical video option, with DTP in mind? Best database handler for the CPU? 3. Any accelerator boards available that can update to 68030? 4. Do fax modems occupy the PDS? E-mail is fine. As there are only 2 slots for extra memory, and both of them must be filled with the same type of SIMM the second question is moot. You can purchace SIMMS for an LC from your favorite memory warehouse from the back of MacWEEK. >2. Most economical video option, with DTP in mind? Best database >handler for the CPU? This will depend on the level of DTP that you will be doing. For the best results I'd recommend the 13" color monitor with the 512k VRAM SIMM upgrade to give you 256 colors instead of the normal 16 that you would get with the 13". It has a much better resolution than the 12" color. Flat file or relational database? If flat file I would suggest either Hypercard 2.0 or Filemaker Pro(both from Claris) Hypercard has the best interface and scripting abilit; Filemaker Pro has the better Layouts and size managebility for large databases. If you want a relational database then I would suggest getting a demo of some of the more popular ones on the market (4th Dimension, Double Helix, Foxbase Mac, Oracle). >3. Any accelerator boards available that can update to 68030? There are a few companies that are producing accelerators for the LC in 68030 and 68040 configurations. Check the back of MacWEEK. >4. Do fax modems occupy the PDS? They will if they are internal fax modems. There are 3 different types of slots that are in the LC: a single PDS slot for expansion cards, the on-board VRAM SIMM slot for either 256k or 512k size SIMMS, and the RAM SIMM slots. -- | Hades || Mac Database Admin. | | Brian V.
