For those interested, The IIci cache card (Apple's, of course) is now shipping; I thought y'all might be interested in a little more information about what happened, so I pushed for official approval of the following statement (if you're wondering why all of us Apple people always put "its my word, not Apple's" down, FYI it took close to 5 weeks to get approval from our PR and Legal dept of this text). --------------------------------- Apple has now started shipping its IIci cache card. The original version was removed from the market after we experienced system failures when the card was installed in some IIci's. The problem was traced to some mass production SRAM which differed in characterization from our expected performance. This resulted in unpredictable behavior in some Mac IIci's when the Cache Card was installed. Rather than simply screen for acceptable parts, we decided to redesign the Cache Card. The redesign involved reducing the signal noise on the board by adding synchronous switching output logic. The performance (a claimed "everyday useage" of 20-30%) and basic design remain the same. The SRP is still $399. You can exchange your old IIci cache card (serial numbers start with "CF") for the new (redesigned) one (serial numbers starting with "AF") under the "Apple Macintosh IIci Cache Card Exchange Program." The redesigned card has a new part # (M0326LL/B--US & parts of Pacific Region, M0326Z/B--Europe), replacing the old (M0326LL/A and M0326Z/A respectively). -------------------- Well, now you know, and you can return to your regularly scheduled flames...
