I'm looking for a good impact printer for the Mac that will print up to 6 carbon copies. Dot-Matrix is ok, but the strike has to be strong and the printer very reliable. I would appreciate it if people with experience in printing multiple copy forms could send me or post recommendations for or against various tractor feed printers. Thanks. We have been using the GCC WriteImpact printer with five carbons (six forms) and the last form still displays quite readable type. It is of course not as dark as the first carbon, but it works very well. When we first got the GCC, it came with its driver version 1.01. This didn't work with FileMaker Pro, because the driver tries to image each page by using the application heap. FileMaker Pro uses almost 100% of its application heap, so the driver wouldn't print anything. I called GCC, and they claimed it was a bug in the way that FileMaker Pro handles the driver. The problem was pretty obvious to me, however, and they didn't fool me! Anyhow, the new driver 2.0 finally came out about a month ago and works great because it dynamically allocates system heap space to image the page. The driver comes with its own Bitstream scalable font versions of Times, Helvetica, Courier, and Symbol, but it will also work just great with ATM (which I prefer) or TrueType. When you order the printer from GCC, make sure you get the educational discount if your from an educational institution. The retail price is $699, but the educational price is right around $500. Of course, GCC also offers a 30 day MBG in case you have doubts as to whether it works or not. Just fax 'em a PO and try it out!
