[comp.sys.mac.hardware] The marriage of TrueType and PostScript - is it working ?

wilde@cs.Colorado.EDU (Nick Wilde) (04/02/91)

Well, the income-tax refund check came in the mail today :). For quite some
time now, my wife and I have been eyeing the new batch of "personal"
postscript printers hungrily (TI PS35, NEC Silentwriter 2 Model 90, QMS
PS410, etc).

Before we go out and plunk our hard earned money down on one of the above,
can somebody relate their experiences with the above printers, especially as
regards to the newly-arrived TrueType technology from Apple ? Does the
marriage of TrueType and Postscript really work, or are we resigning
ourselves to life of incompatibilities with TrueType technology ?

The way I look at it, if you need networking capabilities (we do),
postscript is still the only way to go - at least until Apple announces a
networkable printer with TrueType built in (Of course, that will probably be
considerably more expensive...) - Anybody got any ideas when that will
happen ?

And now, a polite request. Gentle reader, please refrain from speculating, at
least as far as the first of my questions go :) It seems every time I put out
a request for information of this sort, I'm inundated with the types of
replies that begin "I've never actually seen it, but I hear if you do x with
y then it should end up as z..." I can read the Apple Press releases and
speculate myself, thank you very much :) Of course, if you really do have
EXPERIENCE with using TrueType with a postscript printer, I'm anxious to hear
from you.

Of course, speculation on the second question (when Apple will release a
TrueType networkable printer) is welcome, since speculation is probably all
anyone has at this point (at least, anyone that's free to talk about it...)

Thank you in advance.

P.S. E-mail, please. If I get requests for a follow-up, I post a summary...
