If you examine the output of the trnlog_s invocation, you will probably find
that the first four characters are some binary garbage. This stuff is
prepended to the resultant string of the known files SYS$OUTPUT and
SYS$ERROR. The system service manual entry for trnlog_s explains what must
be done to get rid of the binary garbage. Your assign_s system call should
then succeed. This problem only occurs when you use one of the known
file logical names.
