[comp.sys.mac.hardware] MacSync

rs54@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu (Richard Sucgang) (03/25/91)

Okay, here is a very basic question.
What is a MacSync monitor? Anyone who has had experience
with one? Color? Resolution? Performance/price ratio?
Compatibility with models (LC, Si?)?
Recommendation?

E-mail fine.
Many thanks.

I have an NEC MacSync on my Ci. I like it - it's 14" as opposed to
13" for the Apple monitor, and when I bought it the MacSync was cheaper.

I don't think the color is as good, but I don't do much artwork/graphics,
so it makes little difference to me.

So does the text look as good as an Apple monitor? I've seen a VGA
hooked up to an LC on which text was very hard to read. Quite annoying
for text intensive work.

Also, where does one look for MacSync stuff? Greg, I take it you like
your monitor?

By the way, does NEC MacSunc have a light shadow on the right hand side of e.g.
a black line as the Apple 13" monitor has. Which makes the Apple monitor not as
good as the 15" monitor for word processing.

The main difference for me is that the colors on the Apple monitor look more
enriched, and the contrast is a little better.

I work on a Sparcstation 1+ all day long, and it's not as good as the
Sun Monitor (which is a Sony, I think?)
I've spent a lot of time with the MacSync doing word processing,
chatting and foldering on AOL, etc. with no feeling of "I can't look at
this anymore".

Back of Mac<User,World> is where I found it. I like it, yea, but if the
Apple Monitor was the same price I'd buy the Apple, I think.

Something I *don't* know is whether the MacSync actually gives you any more
screen real estate, or just has fatter pixels or larger borders.

The MacSync I purchased has a definite lack of focus--all across the screen.
It is attached to my SE/30 via a RasterOps 264/30 card, and there is a
noticable difference between the clearness of the two monitors. I window full
of text set so it bridges the two screens shows an obvious difference in
clarity. This happens in 1, 2, 4, 8, or 24 bit modes.

My MacSync is going back, to be replaced by a Seiko CM1445 or a Sony 1304.
The MacSync was cheaper, but I need to be able to SEE after using my Mac :-)

Sun does use Sony color monitors for their workstations. (You can tell
by the "defect wires" that traverse the screen. :-) ) I had a 16"
Sony monitor when I worked at Sun and found it more fatiguing than the
Apple monitor I have on my Mac at home. Supposedly the Apple monitor
has a finer pitch than the usual Sony monitors used for workstations
and hence appears sharper. I think that the font and size of the text
being displayed also contrtibutes to monitor fatigue.
