[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Question: Adding hard-drive/memory to Classic/SE30 ?

rmy@trout.cis.ufl.edu (Rasthiyaadu Yakaa) (03/26/91)

How easy/difficult is it to add an internal hard drive and
memory to a basic Classic system. I have been getting
conflicting answers from dealers, vendors, etc ..

a. Is it true that only a slim (1") hard drive will fit the
Classic internally. Will the new Quantum LPS drives fit
the Classic ?? And will the older Quantums NOT fit ??
Is this true of the SE/30 as well ?

b. Does the Classic require some kind of board for internal
memory expansion ? Where does this board fit and what
is this board called or cost ? I thought that regular
SIMMS would do the job. Is there a 3rd party board that
   will do the job?

Will appreciate any answers to the above. e-mail to
rmy@trout.cis.ufl.edu

P.S. In addition to the bare drive, what else is needed to
install an internal hard drive in the Classic (i.e. cables,
mounting brackets, etc. Is there some place I can get these ?
I already have a drive (Quantum 80S) taken from an external
drive -- I would like to install this in a Classic or in a
friend's SE/30. Any suggestions for mounting kits ??

Thanks a lot

For all practical answers, it is true. If you put something larger
than a 1/3 height hard drive into the classic, it will block the
slot for the memory expansion card. If you never want to expand the
memory, you could use a standard drive.

Warning: I have seen some dealers in my area (no names mentioned, sorry)
who are taking regulard Mac Classics without hard drives and putting standard
half height hard drives into them. An uninformed consumer may have a surprise
in store when he/she tries to get a memory upgrade. Beware!

Yes. Inside the machine (read above note). I'm not sure on current prices
but the boards do take normal SIMMs. Yes there are third party boards.
I don't remeber who makes them but they are easy to find in any Macintosh
Magazines (Mac World, Mac Week, Mac User...)

Most of these extras come with the drive.
