[comp.sys.mac.hardware] HD for the classic?

hemstree@greyrock.mso.colostate.edu (Charles H. Hemstreet IV) (04/03/91)

My girlfriend is looking to buy a classic and I told her to get the
straight Vanilla classic. She wants a HD so I told her that I would
install one for her.

I only worked with SE's and Mac II varieties to date so don't know too
much about the new flavors. Are there any quirks I should know about?
Can I install the standard quantum 40mb in it?

The other question is memory. Does the classic take special memory or
can I use standard SE variety simms? Thanks for the help,

Charles

There are two models of Mac Classics (atleast two official ones that I know of)
Theu are:
Classic with 1MB RAM and NO hard disk
Classic with 2MB RAM and 40MB hard disk
The classic has 1MB soldered on the logic board and needs an expansion card to expand it any further. The Apple expansion card has 1MB soldered on and slots for 2 SIMMs.

If you buy the first model and you want to expand the memory, then you need to buy the expansion card(which is included in the second model.) This is fine because some third party card are already available.

About the Hard drive. NO you cannot put a standard half height drive into the classic. If you try, you will block the connector for the memory expansion card and will be stuck with only 1MB RAM! You have to use the new slim line of hard drives. The only ones I know of off the top of my head are Quantum and Connor. I've recently heard strange stories about the Quantum drives so to play it safe you may want to choose the Connor mechanism. (by the way, Apple uses the Connor mechanism in their 40 meg unit

s, and the quantum in their 80 meg units. This was last time I checked.)

Good luck,
