[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Railgun Accelerator

sester@gmdzi.gmd.dbp.de (Andreas Sesterhenn) (04/05/91)

A mounth ago I bought a Railgun 30 accelerator with 25MHz. It was boring
watching my SE at home working on some tiny texts while the SPARC in
my buro compiled some 100 pages per minute.
After mounting the board (quite easy) I was delighted to see how
quick an old SE can be (even witout a coprocessor).

But as far as I have tested my new environment there seems to be one
disadvantage:
the program "Virtual" doesn't work (Error message: ... wrong hardware ...).
That means that I wasn't able (until now) to work with virtual memory.

I think this is because "Virtual" asks the processor "Who are you"
and the processor bravely answers "68000" and not "68030".

My question: Does anyone of you make the same experience and (more important!)
know a solution, say outwit either Railgun or Virtual?

For those who work with any pre-version of System 7 and Railgun:
Does the Railgun card work with the new System?
Any problem with the virtual memory features?

I hope there will be some helpful comments. Thank's in advance.

Now - last and least - something for those of you who like to see some results.
Some of us are working with SMALLTALK which includes a benchmark program.
Here the results (average rating after all test phases):
1) SE (original): 25 (4 MByte internal Memory)
2) Mac II cx: 107 (8 MByte " )
3) SE with Railgun 030 25Mhz: 147 (4 MByte " )
4) Mac II fx: 247 (8 Mbyte " )
5) SPARC SLC: 303 (8 MByte " )

I think that's ok for the price of $799.

Best regards

Andreas
