[comp.sys.mac.hardware] IIsi hard drive problem

cbrown@eagle.wesleyan.edu (04/06/91)

I have a IIsi with 5M memory, a 40MB internal apple drive, a 105MB Quantum
harddrives international external drive and a 14" magnavox monitor. I am
using the internal drive to start up with, and have both the monitor and the
external drive hooked up to the power outlet in the back of the mac so I can
turn everything on from the keyboard.

Here's the problem: The external drive takes too long to spin up to speed so
when the computer is querying the scsi devices, the external drive doesn't show
up. What this means is that when the computer has booted up, I don't have the
external drive on the desktop.

The only solution I have found is to switch on the external drive a few seconds
before the computer, but I'd rather not have to do that.

Is there any way I can make the computer wait a few seconds when it is switched
on so the external drive will have time to speed up?
Could a macro be written so the drive would be mounted from the finder
automatically when the computer was booted?
Are there any other solutions?
The internal drive is scsi id 0 and the external one is id 3. No other scsi
devices.

If anyone could help please post or email me a reply.

Thanks, Chris Brown

Somewhere in the multimegabytes of software archive is an init which does exactly that. It causes the mac to pause for an adjustable amount of time before it starts booting. Unfortunatly I don't know what the name is. Does anyone know the exact name?

I`ll check when I get home. If I find it i'll let you know.
