[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Maximum memory for SE/30 & 512K ROM SIMM

afry@uhura.cc.rochester.edu (Alan R. Fry) (04/05/91)

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but I would like to know
whether the SE/30 can use 2 meg or 4 meg SIMMs to go up to 16 or 32 meg of
memory. I realize that the extra memory beyond 8 meg can't be accessed
under system 6.0.x, but what about 7.0's 32 bit mode? I have read in a few
places (including Apple's generic SE/30 literature, but why believe it just
because they say it :-) that 8 meg is all you get, but I seem to remember
reading somewhere in the UseNet News that you could "slap those puppies in
there and go!" (or words to that effect).

If you can only use 8 meg in the SE/30, what is the limitation? Is it the
256K ROMs? Which brings me to my next question: has Apple made any peeps
about whether they will be making a 512K ROM SIMM? Having the ROM on a SIMM
is a great idea, but only if there are upgrades to stuff in the SIMM slot
(hint! hint!). Once again, I remember this being discussed in these parts
before, but the last I had read was that Apple hadn't said much more than,
"Oh. We didn't know people were interested in that." (Duhhhhh...)

Post or email if you have the skinny.

Thanks,

Alan

OK, from what I have heard/read/asked:

Your SE/30 (and mine) will accept 4 meg simms BUT will not be able to access
more than 14 megs (some say 13) no matter what operating system you are running. This is due to the way the nubus was mapped into the system (yes, even though
you don't have a nubus, that's where it comes from). Each nubus card will
further reduce the amount of addressable ram from 14 megs. The only possible
fix is a replacement of the SE/30 roms with 32-bit clean roms. Apple has
"suggested" "unofficially" according to some sources that they might provide a
rom upgrade at some time, but not just for the purpose of 32-bit cleanleness.
The suggested upgrade would provide some of the parts of sys 7 as well as 32-bit
n roms. NOTE: this is big-time rumor stuff -- absolutly not the "official"
apple word. Also note that on page 75 of your SE/30 manual it SAYS you can
expand the ram to 128 meg, so I personally would like to think that apple is
REQUIRED to provide the rom upgrade at some point.

If anyone has a name/e-mail address for people to send their SE/30-II-IIx-IIcx-
rom wish list, please post it. (Is Cupertino listening???)

Oh, and note that sys 7's virt mem. will also limit you to 14 meg.
