I'm comparing the CD Porta Drive to the Chinon 431, looking to buy. Do these drives both use the same mechanism? (toshiba 3201, I think?) Do either of these drives work with A/UX? For example, If I buy the A/UX CD from Apple, will I be able to use it? I called Cd Technologies, and they couldn't tell me if I could. (No reviews of CD Rom drives that I have seen say anything about using them with A/UX.) If I buy A/UX on CD do I have to have an Apple CD SC? (I hope not.) Any thinghts would be appreciated. -- James L. (No reviews of CD Rom drives that >I have seen say anything about using them with A/UX.) How do you want them to work with AU/X? As a read-only Drive? As long as you have the device driver for that brand of CD in the AU/X world, there shouldn't be any problem. The AU/X CD from Apple is nothing more that the software you need to install AU/X on your machine. You don't run AU/X off of the CD itself. So as far as using the AU/X CD with the drive, you can as long as your using MacOS just like you would for any other CD. As far as reviews of drives that work with AU/X, check out MacUser magazine just over a year ago they had a review of CD drives. I'm at work, so I can't check the date on that issue, but I have it. >If I buy A/UX on CD do I have to have an Apple CD SC? (I hope not.) No you don't (see refference above). If you need any other information, just send me some e-mail. BTW: I own a CD Tech. Porta Drive, and it work decently, but the music interface if very poor, I suggest you get the DA "CD Remote" from Apple which works much better. scott -- Scott Gustafson (408) 944-4672 me (408) 553-8713 beeper Valid Logic Systems, 3 West Plumeria M.S.-C1, San Jose, CA 95134 Internet: scott@valid.com UUCP: {uunet|sun|decwrl}!valid!scott Scott Gustafson (408) 944-4672 me (408) 553-8713 beeper Valid Logic Systems, 3 West Plumeria M.S.-C1, San Jose, CA 95134 Internet: scott@valid.com

Unfortunatly, Apples current support of 3rd party SCSI devices with A/UX seems to be slim to non-existant. The Apple CD ROM drive is actually a good mechanism. It is..how shall we say... industrial strength. From what I hear it will probably last you a lot longer than many of the other drives. Although if you only use it occasionally, this is no big deal. If you play CDs on it while using your Mac, this may be a big deal. The only problem I have ever heard of with the Apple CD ROM player comes from the fan. From my understanding, the original models had a fan which SUCKED dirt into the mechanism which caused problems(dirt on a laser read head). This problem is fixed by an Apple Authorized upgrade. This upgrade entails cleaning the unit and REMOVING the fan(sounds kind of like a downgrade to me). Anyway the new CD ROM units don't come with fans so the problem is no longer... (plus they are much quieter!) Jason Garms tgoose@eng.umd.edu

Gee - I am really suprised to hear that - I have been using a PortaDrive with AUX 2.0 since 2.0 first came out. I had no problems installing from the cdrom, and regularly mount the drive as /cdrom. I do not know (yet) if it works with 2.0.1.... a.schnable@att.com

(plus they are much quieter!) There is another problem I have found with the early Apple CD Roms (and possibly later ones too...) If you set something on top of them, the RF shield will sometimes deform enough to short out the circuit board on top-- which causes the drive not to work UNTIL you open it up to look inside... -- Matthew T.
