[comp.sys.mac.hardware] StyleWriter Printing problems

When I got my StyleWriter, it had a few problems printing. Lines didn't
always line up, the ink was kind of smeary, and occasionally the right
side of documents didn't print very well. Well,
1) the ink problem took about ten pages of text printing to solve. The
ink, when you start a new cartridge, is a bit runny, sir.
2) the printing also improved with better paper. I tend to use Xerox
paper ($3 for 500 sheets) and the 180 dpi draft mode for rough drafts,
and then I feed 24 lb 100% cotton tech-finish paper ($6 for 100 sheets)
for the final copies. Printing at 360 dpi on Xerox paper is okay, but a
lot more smeary.
3) the registration problems and the right hand side printing problems
are easily fixed: hold down the "ready" button and power up. Release
both keys. The head will align itself. The next time you print, it
works really well. Apple should have instructed everyone to do this
step when they set up the printer, since shipping tends to knock the
print head out of whack.

I've had the StyleWriter for a month now. It is really a fantastic
printer for the price. The draft mode is perfect for quick rough draft
print outs. The only complaint I have is that I can usually go to lunch
when it is printing at 360 dpi a twenty page paper. But, then, it's
better than waiting in the laser queue...
