[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Horizontal Lines

A friend has recently been having some odd hardware 
problems with his SE/30.  On startup, a bright screen 
displays with horizontal black lines, spaced about 1 
inch apart.  "Under" this screen, the normal finder/etc. 
screens appear very dimly.  Other than the screen problem, 
it boots normally and functions as normal.  The brightness
 control does not seem to work, at least on the bright 
foreground screen.
Any Ideas?
