This is an EXCELLENT idea.  I volunteer to help create and maintain
such a list.  I do not, however, have a real home on the arpanet.
Perhaps several people could take charge of different categories
and someone could combine and provide a permanent home for the
results.

A good starting point, of course, would be the DECUS VAX SIG tapes.
There's a lot of obsoleted programs and other garbage there, but also
a lot of useful things.  Some possible categories were mentioned
by Willie Lim;  here are those and some others:

	Languages
	Editors
	Text processing
	Debugging tools
	File handling
	Communications (networking, mail systems, etc)
	Hardware support
	Graphics
	Games (?)
	Applications
		VLSI
		AI
		Chemistry
		Math
		.....

Anyone think of any other categories?
