Recently our internal 40Mb Sony hard drive on our Mac IIcx here at work has been acting very strangely. Sometimes when I power up the system, the hard drive chooses not to do so itself. If I hit the side of the computer, however, (gently, of course) it will start spinning up just fine. This does not happen very often but it has happened two or three times quite recently and so I am wondering if anyone else out there in Netland has had any similar experiences to this on their IIcx or whatever computer they may have. At first this sounded to me like an electrical problem of some sort (and it well may be) but I checked over the power supply cable rather well and it appeared to be in fine shape. Another theory of mine was that the hard drive could have a problem with a bering (sp?) that might go out of whack and that by jolting that hard drive it places itself back into its normal position so that the friction is reduced and the hard drive restarts normally. If anyone out there has any ideas as to why this might be happening, I would really appreciate hearing about it... If you E-Mail me, I will be glad to summarize... thomas_m@wums2.wustl.edu
