[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Refilling the Deskwriter ink cartridge

ccocswr@prism.gatech.EDU (Winston M. Rast (Georgia Tech Mac User)) (05/01/91)

I realize this was discussed a couple months ago or so but I didn't pay much
attention then (please forgive).

Can someone out there give me the info on where to buy those (don't even know
what they're called) kits that refill your ink cartridges on the Deskwriter?

Appreciate it _very_ much! :^)
Winston

The kit is called the "JetFill". It costs $10.95 + S/H (plus $2.00/min
"900" service phone charges) from "BottomLine Distribution". Have your
credit card out, and talk fast!

Caution: the JetFill has been badly reviewed in this newsgroup.
The last reviewer pointed out that an ordinary lab syringe worked better.

For those of you who don't fancy syringes squirting ink, Scott Mandell
recently posted an offer to refill DeskWriter and DeskJet cartridges
for a nominal fee. I sent him an empty cartridge last week and it
was returned promptly; ink quality better than the original, on a par
with the current "Water-Resistant" HP inks.

Scott can be reached at:

cavalier%alchemy.uucp@theory.TN.CORNELL.EDU (Scott Mandell)

Send DW cartridges to: 114 Eddy St. #1
                        Ithaca, NY 14850

My price was $5 shipping and handling; good deal when compared
to best mail order prices of about $15 + S/H or retail prices
in the low $20's.

stupidly forgets the phone number:

BottomLine Distribution:1-900-420-3636 (Note: 900 numbers are a pain,
but it was the only ad I found.) BottomLine does have good prices.

I just got a catalog from Lyben Computer Systems (it's their introductory
catalog). It has 'Ink Refills for HP Deskjet Cartridges' by Graphic Utilities.
It says they are compatible with HP DeskJet Plus, DeskWriter, and DeskJet 500.
The price is $8.95 for a black single refill. It's $12.95 for a 2 pack refill.
They have black, red, green and blue for colors.

Their address is:

			Lyben Computer Systems
			1150 Maplelawn
			P.O. Box 1237
			Troy, MI 48099

			(313) 649-4500
			FAX: (313) 649-2500

It says that shipping is a flat $3.00 per order except on certain products where
extra shiping is indicated in the product description. It also says you have to
have a minimum order of $15.00 to pay by check, VISA, MasterCard, or
C.O.D. (if C.O.D. add $3.30).

I have never ordered from this company so I can't tell you how their service
is.

Hope that helps.

Besides JetFill, at the last MacExpo show in San Fransisco last January,
I picked up a different refill cartrige set from Graphic Utilities, Inc
(1-800-669-4723). They use a different bottle than the JetFill, but
the same idea. I can't personally vouch for the ink quality because my
HP cartridge hasn't died yet (it's an eternal cartride that doesn't want
to die, even after printing a lot of graphics), but the samples they
were printing up looked great at the show, and I couldn't smear their
indelible ink when they handed me a little glass of water. Also, just
because of the way they constructed their cartridges, it looks like they'd
be easy to refill with any ink (say, from a stationary store.)

I haven't the fainted idea of price, but they have both indelible and
non-indelible ink in all sorts of colors (I've got a red one I've been itching
to try).

Again, I really haven't tried these out, except at the show, but I thought
I'd pass on the info.

A 10cc syringe and a $2 bottle of Skrip "jet black" ink will get you about 4 or
5 refills, and you can keep using the syringe.... Works great. Ink is moist
upon printing, dries more quickly than I know how to smear it, so the
instantaneity of drying isn't an issue for me.
