Tell me more about this terminal-support SIG.
Do the DEC people you know realize that even their "native" terminal
handling is rather immature in design, as compared say with ITS or Multics?
[It would put them about 8 years behind the ITS implementation ...]
If they hope to support anything reasonably sophisticated and easy-to-use
in their "VaxStation" high-resolution graphics terminals, especially if
it is intergrated with networking, then much more functionality and
protocal has to be build-in. Is there any indication that they are
aware of what has been done in this area?

One of the things that was done to support the VAXstation was the appropriate
VMS code for pseudo terminals, which is distributed as part of the VAXstation
software. The VAXstation is clearly going to be a line of terminals
representing DECs current direction in high resolution graphics terminals. Now
that the terminal driver has been split into a class/port driver pair adding
strange things is easier bum it takes an ACP like object to create new
pseudodevices and with the restructuring of ACPs in VMS 4.0 (3B) it is not
clear where the functionality will go. The VMS design goal of minimal load on
the Terminal Driver to support unused features pushes fancier terminal support
further into the system. Why don't you join the Terminal Support Working Group
of the VAX SIG of DECUS and explain to them exactly how VMS is eight years
behind what their customers should have available and how it can cleanly and
efficiently be added. I dont know who the Chairman is yet as its existance was
only proposed at this DECUS and I didn't get to the organizational meeting. I
am waiting for the next Pageswapper to find out what sucker//////
public spirited citizen volunteered to chair it.
