With all the furor of MODE32 by Connectix floating around, I got curious if my Mac Plus could run it with my Gemini 68030 board. Here's the scoop: Right now, it would take 200% MORE engineering to get it to work with the 128K ROMs, for around 20% of the market. However, there IS a product they're working on that will be important to Plus owners of certain upgrade boards. Connectix and Total systems (I don't know about other companies) are working on Virtual v3.0 (system 7 compatible), that will let us use 4MB SIMMs on the accelerator boards, giving us up to 16MB of chip RAM! This will be a free upgrade for registered owners. (Gee 128MB *would* have been nice, but I guess I can squeeze by with 'only' 16MB, eh?...;) Later on in the discussion, the rep I was talking to said something about how the memory usage of the power-user has roughly doubled each year...and is projected to be up around 4GB (That's right, giga-bytes) by the year 1998. I was too freaked to think to ask what the projected hard drive size will be by then... I wasn't actually clear what 32-bit clean would actually achieve for me, and, aside from mind numbing amounts of space to romp in, he basically told me that right now, except for very narrow markets, it's more of a pain than not, and less than 1/3 of the applications out there truly are 32-bit clean, the rest will cause mysterious crashes...(*sigh*, what else is new) Anyway, keep your eyes open for Virtual 3.0! Disclaimer: I'm just a concerned citizen, not affiliated with Total systems or connectix, (but you *gotta* love their products...;) | Ken Corey kenc@vaxb.acs.unt.edu ken@isect.lonestar.org | | "Ladies strewn, those made to witness his charm, never daring or | | allowed to touch the man behind the machine." -Leah |
