[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Multispool - Does it work with Appletalk Deskwriter v2.1????

rotberg@dms.UUCP (Ed Rotberg) (04/30/91)

Hi,

I just recently got a version of Multispool, and tried to used it on
my Mac IIfx with my Deskwriter (v2.1 driver) hooked up via Appletalk.
The program craps out consistently. When I go the the Multispool
item in the Apple menu, the dialog box that comes up shows all the
normal things along with a message that says "Background printer not
present". If I catually try to print something the program bombs,
usually due to the stack expanding into the heap are (thank you TMON).

Does anybody have any info on whether or not Multispool will work
with the Deskwriter hooked up via Appletalk, or is the problem
something else??

Thanks in advance,

	- Ed Rotberg -

Sorry, I seem to have created a minor firestorm here with an earlier reply
that seemed to indicated the MultiSpool works with the DeskWriter. The
only way in which I have gotten it to work reliably is to spool things to
it, wait until I am ready for a break and then let it print. I have never
gotten it to work reliably while I continue working on the Mac.

Setup
Mac+
DeskWriter V2.0 software

Well, then I'll go on record. It works fine for me. Yes, it's
slow, but one doesn't expect speed from a Mac+ anyway. Yes, performance in
the foreground suffers, but again, you don't expect performance from a
Mac+. After I get my II*i (not sure if it'll be a "c" or an "s" yet), I'll
let you all know how it goes.

This is interesting. I've heard from several sources that you need
version 2.1 of the DW software. Perhaps this is your problem?

For what it's worth, MultiSpool works great for me (IIsi printing serially to a
DeskWriter, DW 2.1 driver).

Only "problems" are trivial. MultiSpool doesn't seem to pass along the DW's
dialogs regarding envelope printing, so I just turn it off (from the DA menu)
when I'm doing envelopes. And it seems only to recognize printers attached to
the printer port. Not unreasonable, but I also use Freedom of Press Light ($55
for pretty darn good postscript on my DW! and they're now sending out a nicely
improved and debugged release). And FofP includes a gizmo called FPSpooler
that needs the printer attached to the modem port because of the way it and the
Mac deal with AppleTalk being on while printing non-AppleTalkedly. So I tend
to keep things plugged in for MultiSpool, and change plugs when I need
postscript output. No big whoop. And I love having my Mac back while long
docts are printing away.

I'll add my two cents as well...
I've been using MultiSpool on my SE/30 with a serially connected DeskWriter
and 2.1 drivers. I couldn't get it to work before with 2.0 drivers.
There doesn't seem to be much, if any, speed degredation (sp?) in either
the printing or foreground task as long as neither is too complicated
(i.e. it works fine if I print a file and go back to my word processing).
I seem to remember it crashing if I exited an application during printing
with the earlier drivers (2.0).

Not true. My printer is attached to the modem port (I use a Plus,
DW2.1, serially connected, & system 6.0.5).

This sounds more like a conflict between Multispool and FoP. As I
say, using the modem port is not a problem.

Two things I have noticed about multispool and the deskwriter:

1) it doesn't like Quickkeys 2.0
2) when you run out of paper, refill the sheet-feeder and put the
deskwriter back on-line, the Mac doesn't see that it can continue
   printing.

True. This is, however, easy to fix. Get into the Multispool
"DA", and select Update (or something like that - it's obvious when you
look at it). This causes Multispool to print all the files you have in
your Multispool Folder which is in the System Folder.

It works alright for me, running:
MacClassic
DeskWriter Driver 2.1
Serial hookup

However, the first I had to do when I got it was to change to the 2.1 driver
routine, while I still used 2.0 it would crash every other time or so.

Sorry, JP. On my IIsi, MultiSpool does NOT work when the printer is attached
to the modem port. Has nothing to do with Freedom of Press compatibilitie

And as I say above, it has nothing to do with FoP versus MultiSpool (in fact,
FoP seems to ignore MultiSpool; at least, it prints through the modem port even
while MultiSpool is stacking ordinary DeskWriter-bound files in its queue and
saying -- wait a sec while I find out what it is saying -- Whoa! The damned
thing just started printing the way JP says it will! Not this afternoon, not
yesterday, not seven or eight times since I downloaded it, but right now, just
as I am replying that once and for all that it won't work....it suddenly starts
to work! Don't that beat all!

Well, I guess my advice regarding MultiSpool is that if it doesn't do what you
want it to do the first eight or ten times, don't give up. And if you have
anything else that's broke, just have John Price tell you it ain't and then try
to prove him wrong!

Someone posted to the net a few weeks ago saying they had solved the mystery
of Multispool's schizophrenic performance (works for some people, doesn't work
for others, works only sometimes for the rest) I was skeptical, thinking I had
given Multispool a fair trial on my machine (hooked to a parallel Epson FX-80)
and concluded it basically didn't work. The person posting said that
Multispool only blows up on trying to print files from the Finder (i.e. if you
use it with, say, TeachText, it won't blow up) I had always tried to do a
"Print Directory" from the Finder, not figuring anything would be different
from an application, so I tried it from TeachText. It worked. Every Time.
Tried it from the Finder. Print Error 0. Every time. Hope this helps.
