[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Connecting old Apple II drive to Mac LC

jcav@quads.uchicago.edu (john cavallino) (05/15/91)

A friend has purchased a Mac LC with the IIe emulator card. He has an
old external 5.25" disk drive originally intended for the Apple IIc (the
drive case is refrigerator-white). He wants to connect this drive to the
emulator card. Is this possible? What kind of cable does he need?
(pinouts would be extremely helpful). Thanks in advance.

From the documentation I have, the 'official' drives supported are:
  "DRIVES SUPPORTED
   - 2 Apple 5.25 Drives (Platinum 5.25 Drvie is the only 5.25-inch drive
     supported)
   - 1 UniDisk 3.5 Drive (White 3.5-inch external)
   - Internal SuperDrive
  "

However, the document goes on to tell how:
"To connect a Disk II to the Apple IIe Card for Macintosh LC, Use a UniDisk
   cable, service part number 590-0327.
" followed by instructions on how to replace the old ribbon cable with the
     new cable.

So you may be able to use your white drive, but Apple 'officially' says no.
Paraphrased I think it implies you'll void your warranty, and may destroy
your equipment. I'm too chicken to try, yet :-)

Have a nice day. Aren't you also impressed that the LC/II emulator will
emulate Super Serial cards up to 1200 baud! Wow, and I was worrying about
getting a 2400 or 9600 baud modem for it. Ha, ha, ha, ha.
