[comp.sys.mac.hardware] External FDHD drive vs. Replacement of internal on SE/30

jess@gn.ecn.purdue.edu (Jess M Holle) (05/16/91)

A couple of questions on the above subject:

 1) Is there any drop in speed between an internal FDHD and an external
    (noticeable drop that is)?

 2) Does anyone know anything about the Applied Engineering external 1.44Mb
drive? Is it a true FDHD/SuperDrive (ie. can it write 400K, 800K, and
    1.44Mb Mac formats and 360K, 720K, 1.44Mb DOS/OS/2 formats, etc, etc)?

 3) Anyone know of a reputable, true FDHD/SuperDrive that is cheaper than
$228? That is the deal that I saw on the Applied Engineering Drive above.

 4) I may well end up getting a new internal FDHD drive installed at a dealer.
Are there any advantages/disadvantages that I should know about besides
the handiness of have an internal vs. the lower price of a third party
external (internal would run ~$265 plus installation)?

Any other comments on this issue would be appreciated.
