[comp.sys.mac.hardware] LC/Si Monitor options

jfr@locus.com (Jon Rosen) (05/18/91)

I am about to finally get another Mac (I will be keeping my expanded
Mac 128 nee 512 nee 512E with SCSI and my son will take it to college).

Current LC street price in Elay is about $1600 plus monitor. That's
for the 2M/40M base machine with normal keyboard.

The street prices on the monitors are 12-in $450 and 13-in $675. I am
not interested in monochrome.

What I would like to know (E-mail or post) is what other monitors
(please be specific about manufacturer, model number and cable
requirements) have been tested and plugged into either the LC and
optionally the Si. I do not want to add a board (can't on the LC).
Just a monitor. Also, what resolutions (HxV and colors) do these
other monitors support. The stores have all told me they do not
"recommend" other monitors because of problems they have had.
However, looking at the price they are getting (even after discounts)
for the Apple monitors, it is pretty obvious why they are taking this
approach. I know there are special cable and plug requirements and
possibly some special circuitry that tells the Mac what type of
monitor it is, but this shouldn't be rocket science to a good
EE grad student, I would guess. So I assume some other monitors
have been hooked up to the new Macs successfully. I will be waiting
with baited breath (and wallet) for some clues.

Thanx,

Jon Rosen

PS - And no, I will not split what I save with anyone :-) :-) :-)
