[comp.sys.mac.hardware] SCSI Ethernet adaptor for the SE

SRAACCB@albert.dsir.govt.nz (Chris Bowman) (05/20/91)

Hi,
I'm looking around for an Ethernet adaptor for my SE. I want to put
an accelerator in the SE's slot so I am interested in a SCSI-based
ethernet solution.

MacConnection sell the Nuvotech NuvoLink SC. Is there some kind person
out there who could give me some feedback on this product? Does it
need its own mains supply or does it takes its power from the Mac SCSI
port? I will be using 10BaseT twisted pair. Does this product support
twisted pair or will I need to use a balun? Finally, are there any other
suitable products that people know of?

Sorry if it appears that these questions could be answered by reading the data
sheet for this product but such things are not always easy to track down in
NZ.

Thanks in advance,

Chris Bowman

Me too...

I have had this product recommended to me, for an SE/30 with an A3 display
card taking up the single slot. However, a recent issue of (UK) MacUser
Magazine said that the current driver for it didn't work properly with
Apple's MacTCP driver. Anyone have any info on this ?

We are using some of them here. (With Classics, which do not support
internal cards.) They seem to work fine.

It comes with a transformer that you plug into the wall. So if you have
Mac, printer and Nuvolink, you need 3 outlets.

The version we use supports thick & thin ethernet. There is another
that supports 10BaseT, but I have not tried it.

Nuvolink SC is one of the fastest SCSI external adapters available. The power
source is external. When buying from Mac Connection, you may need to purchase
a 220 V power source in an electronics shop (I don't know what the voltage in
NZ is). It works well with any Mac with an SCSI port, with one exception.
The problem is that the box has to be turned on BEFORE your Mac looks at
SCSI, just like any HD. With the Portable sleeping, the adapter seem to
communicate for a while until bus timeout, and when waking up, network will
not work. You have to turn it out and on, then to restart the Portable.
This is the only limitation I found.
