[comp.sys.mac.hardware] System 7.0, termination, problems, etc. etc.

rcook@ncsa.uiuc.edu (Robert Cook) (05/23/91)

Maybe one of you hardware gurus can figure this out....

I'm having trouble getting System 7.0 to run on my Classic 4/105 APS external.
The install works fine, but when I reboot, the hard drive hangs during the
rebuild of the desktop.

The drive works fine running 6.0.7.

When I try to boot from the install 1 disk, I get error 47 (or 41- cant recall)
--reboot with extensions off. To no avail, still hangs trying to rebuild.
So I got a sys 7 startup disk from a friend, and tried to boot from it.
It boots fine, but when it scans the SCSI bus and sees an HD, it tries to
rebuild.....boom....select light comes on...system hangs.

With the drive unplugged, the startup disk works fine.
Well, I started thinking about a termination problem.
I have no internal hard drive, so I thought I had found a problem when I
remembered that the motherboard was swapped a couple months ago when I had
some RAM installed (didn't want to void my warrantee). I took the Classic
to the dealer so he could check to see if the terminator on the motherboard
was left off (aren't terminators put on Classics shipped w/no internal HD?)
Well the terminator was indeed left off, so I had them put another one on.
We then tried to boot from a floppy to reformat the drive, but SCSI probe
found no hard drives connected. When we remove the terminator everything works
fine again.

Does Apple ship Classics terminated on the motherboard if no internal hd is
installed? This is a pretty important question.

Should this terminator be there or not? Right now I'm running without it,
because 6.0.7 only works without it. The external drive is terminated.

Does system 7.0 do some funny disk addressing that 6.0.7 doesn't? Could there
be a bad sector on my drive causing 7.0 not to work but 6.0.7 to work fine?
APS say's they can't duplicate the problem using the same setup as me.
i.e. Mac Classic w/ 4MB RAM, APS Quantum Pro 105 HD.

I think I'm going to send the drive to APS and see if they can get it to work.
But first I wanted to ask the only real experts I can count on (the Usenet
folks) before I go losing my HD for probably a week or more.

If I left anything out, and you have some ideas, please e-mail me, and I'll
explain things further if neccessary.

BTW, this is all using APS Power tools 1.13 as the driver.
