[comp.sys.mac.hardware] Deskwriter/Rocket compatibility

lito@ecl.psu.edu (LCubed) (05/24/91)

hi,

i'm having a problem getting my deskwriter to function with my radius rocket
card. it works perfectly fine with the rocket turned off. however, turning the
rocket on yields ' the printer is not responding. make sure it is properly
connected....' dialog box. i'm running system 6.0.7 with the deskwriter 2.1
driver. i've had to borrow 4 Mb of RAM from another machine so i can run my cx
in an unaccelerated mode whenever I need to print. has anyone else encountered
this problem???? are there any software fixes I should know about??
(oh, yeah, the deskwriter is hooked up via a serial port. the rocket works fine
with the appletalk imagewriter on our lab network).

any suggestions would be appreciated,
thanks in advance,

Regarding DeskWriter with the Rocket accelerator:

It is a common problem that some accellerators seem to break the ROM code
that supports 57.6 K baud. Since the DeskWriter is one of the few products
that uses this baud rate, it commonly has the problem. It seems like
accelerator cards should patch the ROM code but they must not (or else
they don't test the patch very will at 57.6 K baud).

Best workaround I can think of is to use the DeskWriter in AppleTalk mode.
The accelerator cards don't break that (or else people would be very
unhappy). It will cost you a couple of LocalTalk/PhoneNet adapters howere.
Also contact the makers of the accelerator card, suggest they test it
with some 57K baud products, such as the DeskWriter.
